This book starts out with a slap and never lets up. The whole read has that dark gritty feel, really setting the stage and then keeping it there the whole way through. I enjoy dystopian but I’m picky about my reads. This book ticked all the check-marks for a fun yet dark read without the need for filters or blinders. The setting is just far enough into the future that it feels like it could actually happen in your lifetime. The horrible things people have to endure really add to the dark feel. I like that Parker didn’t hold back or gloss over the events or characters. Everything feels well thought through and fleshed out. If you like your books a bit on the dark edge of things then you’ll likely love this book. I received an ARC through Smith Publicity in exchange for an honest review. My rating: 4 of 5 stars
First off, this is not an easy one day read by any means. There are points where the reader thinks they have an idea of what’s going on or about to happen only to find out it’s very different, and yet intriguing. A few times I thought about putting down the book and moving on but I admit, I was hooked. I needed to find out how it all wraps up and ends. As you read this book allow your mind to delve deep into the world Byrne creates. Byrne does a fine job with this tale and I expect future releases to be as well crafted. My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My dystopian reading son enjoyed this book immensely through the first 3/4 of the book but isn’t thrilled with the way everything wraps up. Personally I feel the book gives a fresh take on an often overdone genre. The read is easy and flows nicely. I agree the ending was too quick too easy to wrap up all the various plot threads and ideas. Overall this is an entertaining read and will likely please those who devour dystopian themed books. At first and through the first three quarters of this book I wasn’t sure about liking it just a little or just liking it enough to finish reading the rest. I’m not a fan of lack of details but I think I understand the authors reasoning behind that for this particular book. The setting isn’t important to the plot and could serve as a distraction from the point of the book. That said, I would have rated this a fourth star had the world development been implemented. The characters are nicely fleshed out and have their own quirks but a lot of what they do and say, and how they say or don’t say it, doesn’t make much sense until later in the book. I don’t feel this book is worthy of the high praise and comparison, especially to nineteen eighty four, but I do feel it is a decent read that many will enjoy and take something from the experience. Before you say no to another dystopian book give this one a chance. I doubt you’ll be let down. The writing is smooth and written intelligently making this an easy read that is difficult to put down. The characters are well fleshed out and believable aside from a couple minor things that lends this to a younger audience instead of adult readers. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I can easily recommend it to anyone who enjoys light fantasy, dystopian, post-apocalyptic or survival themed reads. Well written intriguing continuation. I like the choices of words and turns of phrasing. The characters have depth and feel nicely fleshed out. The dialogue feels natural. It is obvious a lot of research has gone into this book and it shows in a very positive manner. The plot feels original and has a fairly good flow. Overall this is an interesting read to spend time with, not a quick easy sort of read. I can easily recommend this series to most readers of action, adventure, mystery, suspense and sci fy. I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
We received this collection in exchange for our honest unpaid opinion. I will start off with this: everyone will find a favorite story. Eleven stories is no small feat and I am impressed with more than one. Of course I found two I was less thrilled to be reading but that’s still great odds. One in particular was very slow getting started and I was not able to connect with the characters at all. So pass over those two and we still have NINE stories I feel are well worth the read. My middle son loves this genre and enjoyed reading each of the books with no complaint. Overall this is a great collection and well worth the purchase and time spent reading.
I like the premise for the plot in this book. The flow is a touch slow at the beginning but rightfully so. The characters have light development and basic fleshing out; enough for the quick read that this is. Overall this is a fun quick read, enjoyable for what it is. I received an evaluation copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion. No compensation has been or will be received beyond the evaluation copy.
I enjoyed the story and characters and liked the setting and the idea of the plot. I wasn’t fond of the Star Wars theme and felt it could have been so much better using something created in the mind of the author. I’ve read several books with this setup so the idea isn’t original, but it was well written. As you read the book the references make sense and fit the plot but it just falls short for me. The second book in the series is much better and can be read without reading this one. The author shows potential and growth between the two books so I’d say keep an eye out for future releases.
I was given a free ebook version of this novel by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for your generosity.
