The Deep by Jen Minkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It’s interesting to see how an author develops their craft through experience and time, always open to constructive criticism (and some not so constructive) and improving with each step. Pick up the first book in this series and read it with an open mind and the reassurance that each book is considerably better than the last. You’ll see what I mean as you read the second and then this one, the best of the three. Familiar characters continue to explore not only their island but themselves and others in an intimate yet naive way. This isn’t easy to convey but Jen does a fine job. The writing is good, the characters are fairly well fleshed out and the plot is intriguing enough to keep the reader engaged. I received an evaluation copy in exchange for my honest unpaid opinion. I’m going to keep a watch for future releases by this author and I think you should too.

In reading your comments, Jenn, it brought to mind what an agent told me about a writer’s first novel not being publishable. I can’t help but believe she’s right ’cause I think, for most of us, we need a few novel-length practice books to bring up our quality in craft.

Like anything else a person aspires to be, practice is the only way to reach our goals, one step at a time.

I really enjoyed this book, the whole series is great. Really great writing and storyline. I know what you mean about the first one though, it took a while to understand what was going on.
